Paradise creek is located in the Palouse River hydrologic basin. The headwaters of the creek are located on Moscow Mountain in the Palouse Range, with the creek flowing in a southwesterly direction for approximately 31 km (19 miles) through the City of Moscow, across the Washington State line to the South Fork of the Palouse River near Pullman, WA. The watershed is 50,864 ha in size with 30,554 ha located within Idaho. The upper portion of the watershed is steeply sloped, with the majority of the drainage basin consisting of moderately steep rolling hills. Elevations range from 1330 m to 770 m (4360 ft to 2530 ft). The Palouse hills are very susceptible to erosion due to their topography, soil texture, climate and land use practices. |
EVALUATION OF CONSERVATION PRACTICES IN A MIXED-LAND USE WATERSHED USING CUMULATIVE EFFECTS MODELING AND INTERDISCIPLINARY ANALYSES
NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: To study the effectiveness of conservation practices at the watershed scale using data from an extensively researched watershed. The second is to examine how watershed restoration in a mixed-land use watershed can be optimized by considering its biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics. To show why (or why not) conservation practices are effective at the watershed scale with emphasis on statistical analysis of existing monitoring data, geo-spatial modeling, and integrated physical and socio-economic analyses. Our research includes an outreach plan for information transfer and data storage and retrieval.
